About Island Express

Island Express offers private charters on and around Penobscot Bay and beyond. We specialize in customizing your experience on the water to make your day on the water memorable. The trips described on the rates page will give you examples of places to go. Feel free to call and create your own adventure on the water. Families with young children are encouraged to charter with us.

Your Captain

Dave Estes is a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with over 20 years of experience on the water. He has lived and sailed aboard small sailboats within the Gulf of Maine, and large commercial ships across the Atlantic. He teaches science and navigation when not splicing rope at Hamilton Marine. He lives in Searsport with his wife Cathy and children David and Rosa Lee.

Your Vessel

Island Express is a 21’ Parker Sport Cabin, powered by a Yamaha 175 hp engine. She’s a fast, clean, and comfortable cruiser capable of landing you on your own secluded beach.

Navigation Instruction

A practical hands-on approach to coastal piloting or celestial navigation. Take one day or several successive lessons over many days to learn from scratch, or just brush up on your skills. Learn how to use the nautical chart, navigation tools, compass, and sextant to keep you safe on the water regardless of your electronic means. Study materials included to take away with you before you venture out on your own boat. Costs based on your needs.

Summer on Penobscot Bay

Penobscot Bay is usually calmest in the morning, with temperatures in the 60’s to 70’s as the sun rises. Early in the afternoon the wind usually picks up from the south bringing with it an exhilarating white-capped bay. With the sea breeze comes cooler air and spray. Stay warm and dry in the cabin if you wish.
